Workers Compensation Insurance in Michigan (MI)

Small Business Coverage and Peace of Mind

Michigan has long been a leader in American ingenuity. With brands like Cadillac, Chrysler and Chevy, Detroit has led the world in innovation for more than a century. American culture would not be the same without Michigan’s Motown Records, Madonna, or Serena Williams, and breakfast would not be the same without Kellogg’s and Post cereals. As anyone who has visited the Upper Peninsula can tell you, the Great Lake State has some of the most beautiful forests, rivers and lakes in the world.

While Michigan is home to major corporations like GM, Ford, Penske, Lear and Whirlpool – small businesses have had a significant impact on the state’s economy. There are about 850,000 small businesses in Michigan, which make up more than 98 percent of all employers in the state. Privately owned businesses employed around 1.7 million workers, or 52 percent of the private sector labor force.1

Whatever the size of the business, the Michigan Workers’ Disability Compensation Act covers virtually all employers, both public and private; however, there are exemptions. Seaman on navigable waters are covered by the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 and workers loading and unloading vessels are covered by the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act.2

For all other workers, Michigan’s workers’ compensation is a “no fault” system that requires employers to compensate workers injured on the job no matter who is at fault. Injured workers are entitled to the cost of medical treatment, certain benefits to make up for lost wages, and up to 104 weeks of vocational rehabilitation services.3

Some of the top small businesses in need of workers’ compensation insurance in Michigan include restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, print shops, and professional employers such as colleges, doctors, and libraries. Almost all of these employers purchase their insurance policies from private insurance companies.
